Franklin Buchanan of Maryland was a United States Navy officer and later admiral in the Confederate States Navy. The collection includes a diary, 1829-1831, of Buchanan while a United States Navy officer on a Mediterranean tour of duty on the Constellation, and, 1833-1834, on another Mediterranean tour, partly on the and partly on the frigate ; and a letter book, 1862-1863, with handwritten transcriptions of outgoing letters, orders, and reports, of Buchanan while Confederate admiral at Norfolk, Va., and at Mobile, Ala.
